Tooth Extraction in Horsham, PA

At Horsham Dental Care, preserving your natural teeth is always our top priority. However, there are situations where tooth extraction is the best or only option to protect your overall oral health. Dr. Aarti Lala performs extractions with a gentle touch and compassionate care, making the procedure as comfortable as possible. If you need a tooth removed, you can trust our team to put your well-being first and to help you plan for tooth replacement to restore your smile.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extractions:

  • Severe Decay or Infection: When a cavity is so large that it destroys most of the tooth structure, or an infection/abscess is too extensive to treat with a root canal, the tooth may need to be removed to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Advanced Gum Disease: Periodontal disease can loosen teeth by destroying the supporting bone. If a tooth becomes very loose or the bone loss is severe, extraction might be necessary.
  • Impacted or Problematic Wisdom Teeth: Often, third molars (wisdom teeth) don’t have enough room to emerge properly and can cause pain, crowding, or infection. These are commonly extracted (see our Wisdom Teeth Extractions section under Oral Surgery for more details on this).
  • Overcrowding or Orthodontic Needs: In some cases, teeth may be extracted as part of orthodontic treatment or to relieve crowding, especially if a mouth is too small to accommodate all teeth properly. Removing a tooth can help align the rest correctly.

Our gentle extraction process: Dr. Lala will first thoroughly numb the area with local anesthesia – you’ll feel pressure but no pain during the procedure. We also offer sedation options (like nitrous oxide or oral sedation) if you are anxious, to help you relax. Using specialized instruments, the doctor will carefully loosen the tooth and lift it out of the socket. You might be surprised at how quick and painless a modern extraction can be. We take great care to be minimally invasive and to preserve surrounding bone and tissue.

After the tooth is out, we will place gauze and have you bite down to stop any bleeding. We’ll provide you with clear aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing. Typical aftercare includes:

  • Bite on gauze for 15-20 minutes immediately after to help a clot form.
  • Use ice packs on the cheek to reduce swelling for the first 24 hours, as needed.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the day.
  • Eat soft foods and avoid the extraction site when chewing. Do not use straws or smoke for at least 48-72 hours (to prevent dislodging the healing clot).
  • Keep the area clean by gently rinsing with saltwater after 24 hours, and continue your normal brushing routine, being careful near the site.

Planning for the future: If the extracted tooth leaves a gap (other than a wisdom tooth), Dr. Lala will discuss tooth replacement options with you before the extraction whenever possible. Options may include a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture. We want to ensure you maintain a complete, functional smile even after an extraction.

Our Horsham office has helped many patients from here and neighboring towns like Warminster, Hatboro, Ambler and North Wales through the tooth removal process. We know an extraction can sound intimidating, but our experienced dentists and caring staff will support you every step of the way. With proper care and our guidance, your extraction site will heal quickly, and we’ll help you achieve a healthy, pain-free smile going forward.
