Cavities

Dental cavities are one of the most common oral health issues, but they are also highly preventable. A cavity starts as a small hole caused by bacteria acids eating away the enamel. Without treatment, it can grow larger, causing toothaches or infections. At Horsham Dental Care, we focus on early detection and gentle treatment of cavities to save your tooth. Our skilled team uses modern, tooth-colored fillings to restore decayed teeth discreetly. With proper care and regular checkups, we help patients in our community avoid cavities and keep their smiles healthy.

Signs and Symptoms of a Cavity

In early stages, you might not notice a cavity. As decay gets larger, you may experience:

  • Tooth Sensitivity or Pain: You might feel discomfort when eating something hot, cold, or sweet, or experience a persistent toothache (especially when biting down).

How We Treat Cavities

If we find a cavity, we will treat it promptly in the least invasive way possible:

  • Dental Fillings: For small to moderate cavities, we remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the hole with a durable, tooth-colored composite resin. The filling blends with your tooth and restores its strength and function.
  • Crowns: If a cavity is very large or the tooth is cracked, a filling might not suffice. We may place a dental crown (cap) over the remaining tooth structure after cleaning out the decay. The crown protects the tooth and allows you to bite normally.
  • Root Canal: If decay reaches the tooth’s pulp (inner nerve), the tooth can still be saved with root canal therapy. We clean out the infected pulp, seal the canal, and usually place a crown on the tooth.(In every case, we ensure you’re properly numbed and comfortable during treatment.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Our team makes the process as comfortable as possible. We numb your tooth and the surrounding area, so you shouldn’t feel pain while the decay is removed and the filling is placed. You might feel some pressure or vibration from the dental instruments. Afterward, mild soreness is possible once the numbness wears off, but it usually resolves quickly.

Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and see your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams.
