Fluoride is often called nature’s cavity fighter, and for good reason. It strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to the acids that cause decay. Children, who are still developing good brushing habits (and who do love their snacks!), can greatly benefit from a little extra fluoride boost beyond toothpaste. That’s why we incorporate fluoride treatments as a routine part of pediatric dental visits at Horsham Dental Care.
What is a fluoride treatment? For kids (and even adults at higher risk of cavities), we typically use a fluoride varnish. This is a sticky form of fluoride that we paint onto the teeth with a tiny brush. It’s usually flavored (mint, bubblegum, etc.) and sets quickly upon contact with saliva. The beauty of varnish is that it adheres to the teeth, allowing fluoride to be absorbed into the enamel over the next several hours. We apply it usually at the end of the cleaning appointment, and the child can go about their day normally, just with some minor post-care instructions (like “don’t brush until tonight” or “eat soft foods for the rest of the day if possible and avoid very hot liquids for a few hours”).
Why fluoride for kids? Kids are growing teeth (both baby and permanent), and fluoride helps incorporate into the enamel structure making it harder and more decay-resistant. It can even help remineralize early microscopic cavities (those white spot lesions) before they become full-blown cavities. It’s like giving the teeth a protective vitamin.
Horsham’s water supply may be fluoridated (many communities are), which already helps. But the direct application at the dentist office is a much higher concentration, targeted exactly where it’s needed. Think of it as a periodic immune booster specifically for the teeth.
How often? Typically every six months during cleanings. For children with a lot of cavity activity or special needs that make oral care challenging, we might do it every 3-4 months. It’s a quick 1-2 minute procedure – truly easy insurance for the teeth.
Some facts to reassure parents: Fluoride varnish uses a safe amount of fluoride; since it hardens on contact, very little is ingested. It’s far safer than the old days of foam trays, where kids might swallow some. Varnish has become the standard of care for pediatric fluoride because of its safety and efficacy. The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry endorse it strongly for cavity prevention.
At our practice, we’ve seen a noticeable reduction in new cavities among our young patients who consistently get fluoride treatments and sealants, combined with good home care. It’s a team effort: we do our part here, and you do yours with helping your kids brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and floss.
For parents in Horsham, Ambler, Willow Grove etc., who ask “Is the fluoride treatment really necessary?”, we often explain how it’s like a little shield we’re putting on the teeth. Given how common childhood cavities are, any tool to reduce that is worth it. It’s cost-effective and could save your child from a filling or two (or more).
So at your child’s next visit, when our hygienist asks what flavor varnish they’d like, you can feel good knowing this simple step is actively fortifying their smile. Dr. Mathews and Dr. Lala are happy to answer any fluoride questions, especially if you have concerns. But rest assured, we wouldn’t recommend it if we wouldn’t use it on our own kids (and we do!). Here’s to strong, cavity-free teeth for your kiddos.
