Scaling and root planing – often referred to as a “deep cleaning” – is a special kind of cleaning we perform when gums show signs of disease (periodontitis). Unlike a regular dental cleaning that focuses on the tooth surfaces above the gums, scaling and root planing goes below the gumline to clear out the bacterial buildup that’s causing infection. This procedure is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for gum disease and can significantly improve gum health when gingivitis has advanced.
What does scaling and root planing involve?
Because this procedure delves deeper than a standard cleaning, we usually numb the area (typically doing one quadrant or half of the mouth at a time) so you remain comfortable. You’ll likely visit us for two to four sessions to complete all areas of the mouth, depending on severity. Each session targets a section of the mouth and can take about an hour. Patients are kept very comfortable during the process; your comfort is our priority.
What to expect afterwards: It’s normal for gums to be a bit tender or slightly swollen after a deep cleaning, and your teeth might be sensitive as they get used to being clean at the roots. Dr. Lala or Dr. Mathews may recommend a warm saltwater rinse or a gentle antiseptic rinse to soothe the gums. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with any minor discomfort. The great news is you will likely notice your gums look pinker and bleed less when brushing soon after treatment – signs of healing!
In the weeks following scaling and root planing, your gums should gradually tighten back up around your teeth as inflammation subsides. We’ll have you back for a follow-up periodontal evaluation to measure improvements in your gum pocket depths and make sure the infection is under control. Many patients see pocket depths reduced and gum tissue health improves significantly post-treatment.
