Scaling and Root Planing in Horsham, PA

Scaling and root planing – often referred to as a “deep cleaning” – is a special kind of cleaning we perform when gums show signs of disease (periodontitis). Unlike a regular dental cleaning that focuses on the tooth surfaces above the gums, scaling and root planing goes below the gumline to clear out the bacterial buildup that’s causing infection. This procedure is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for gum disease and can significantly improve gum health when gingivitis has advanced.

What does scaling and root planing involve?

  • Scaling: Our skilled dental hygienist will carefully remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the tooth surfaces below the gumline. We use specialized instruments (and sometimes an ultrasonic scaler) to reach into the pockets where bacteria have accumulated. This scaling may go to the bottom of deep periodontal pockets to ensure all irritants are cleared out.
  • Root Planing: After scaling, the root surfaces of your teeth may be a bit rough (microscopically) from the tartar and toxin buildup. We smooth out those root surfaces – this is called planing. A smoother root is more difficult for bacteria to cling to, and it helps your gums reattach to the tooth over time, shrinking the pocket depth.

Because this procedure delves deeper than a standard cleaning, we usually numb the area (typically doing one quadrant or half of the mouth at a time) so you remain comfortable. You’ll likely visit us for two to four sessions to complete all areas of the mouth, depending on severity. Each session targets a section of the mouth and can take about an hour. Patients are kept very comfortable during the process; your comfort is our priority.

What to expect afterwards: It’s normal for gums to be a bit tender or slightly swollen after a deep cleaning, and your teeth might be sensitive as they get used to being clean at the roots. Dr. Lala or Dr. Mathews may recommend a warm saltwater rinse or a gentle antiseptic rinse to soothe the gums. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with any minor discomfort. The great news is you will likely notice your gums look pinker and bleed less when brushing soon after treatment – signs of healing!

In the weeks following scaling and root planing, your gums should gradually tighten back up around your teeth as inflammation subsides. We’ll have you back for a follow-up periodontal evaluation to measure improvements in your gum pocket depths and make sure the infection is under control. Many patients see pocket depths reduced and gum tissue health improves significantly post-treatment.

Scaling and root planing is a highly effective way to stop gum disease from getting worse. It gives your gums a fresh start so you can maintain them with good home care. Our patients in Horsham and nearby Willow Grove have been thrilled to see bleeding gums turn healthy pink again after deep cleanings. If Dr. Lala or Dr. Mathews has recommended a deep cleaning for you, it’s because we truly want to help you save your teeth and avoid more invasive gum surgery later. With our gentle technique and your commitment to follow-up care, we can conquer gum disease together and keep your smile strong.
