Dental bonding is one of the simplest and most cost-effective cosmetic dental treatments available. It involves the application of a composite resin (the same material as tooth-colored fillings) to the surface of a tooth to repair or improve its appearance. The procedure is called bonding because the material actually bonds to the tooth. It’s a great option for small corrections and can usually be done in just one appointment without any drilling of the tooth in cosmetic scenarios.
Common uses for cosmetic bonding:
How bonding is done: We start by selecting a resin shade that blends with your tooth. For front teeth, we often use a highly polishable, enamel-like composite. The surface of the tooth is prepared by lightly etching it with a mild acidic gel to create a rough surface at the microscopic level – this helps the bonding material adhere better. Then we apply a liquid bonding agent. Next, the putty-like composite resin is applied and sculpted to the desired shape. Dr. Lala and Dr. Mathews have a keen eye for artistry here; they shape and smooth the resin to replicate natural tooth contours. Once it looks perfect, we shine a curing light on it to harden the material. It sets in minutes. Finally, we further trim and polish the bonded area to a high shine so it matches the sheen of the rest of the tooth. When done right, bonding is virtually undetectable to the naked eye.
One of the great advantages of bonding is that it’s usually reversible and low-commitment compared to something like a veneer. It requires minimal to no removal of enamel. If the bonding ever chips or wears, it can be touched up or redone easily. The lifespan of bonding can vary – typically several years up to a decade, depending on the area and your habits (nail biters or pen chewers might chip bondings more readily, for example). Avoid using bonded front teeth as tools or biting extremely hard foods with them to prolong their life.
Our patients around Horsham have been amazed how an hour in the chair can fix that little flaw that always bothered them. It’s a relatively quick confidence booster. If you’re looking to make a small cosmetic tweak to your smile, ask us about bonding. Dr. Mathews and Dr. Lala enjoy the artistic aspect of this work – it’s very gratifying to see a patient light up when they see a chip gone or a gap closed immediately after the procedure. Beautiful results, no drilling, no anesthesia – that’s the beauty of bonding!
