TMJ Therapy in Horsham, PA

If you experience frequent jaw pain, clicking or popping in the jaw joint, difficulty opening your mouth fully, or tension headaches, you may be dealing with a TMJ disorder (often abbreviated as TMD). The TMJ – or temporomandibular joint – is the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull, and it’s involved in chewing, speaking, and yawning. TMJ disorders can arise from various causes (stress-related clenching, bite misalignment, arthritis, or injury) and can significantly impact quality of life. At Horsham Dental Care, we provide TMJ therapy to help alleviate these symptoms and restore comfortable jaw function. An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from TMJ disorders as per healthline.com, and our team has experience in helping patients manage this condition.

Array

Signs of a TMJ disorder (TMD):

  • Jaw pain or soreness that may radiate to the face or ear area.
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing your mouth (sometimes accompanied by a sensation of the jaw catching or locking).
  • Difficulty or discomfort when chewing, or a feeling that your upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly.
  • Frequent tension headaches or neck/shoulder pain.
  • Earaches or pressure that is not due to an ear infection (the TMJ is very close to the ear canal).

Our TMJ therapy solutions: Dr. Lala will first perform a thorough evaluation, which may include checking your bite alignment, muscle tenderness, joint function, and possibly taking diagnostic images. Depending on the cause and severity of your TMD, treatment may involve one or several of the following:

  • Custom TMJ Splint/Nightguard: Often the first line of treatment is a special oral appliance (similar to a nightguard) worn over the teeth, particularly at night. This TMJ splint helps reduce clenching/grinding, repositions the jaw to a more relaxed position, and prevents tooth wear. By easing pressure on the joint, it can significantly relieve pain and muscle tension.
  • Bite Adjustment: If your TMD is related to the way your teeth fit together, we may suggest adjusting the bite. This can be done through minor reshaping of certain teeth or restoring teeth that are out of alignment. In some cases, orthodontics (like Invisalign) might be considered to correct bite issues contributing to TMJ stress.
  • Exercises and Therapies: We can teach you simple jaw exercises and stretching techniques to strengthen jaw muscles and improve flexibility. Warm compresses, stress-reduction techniques, and posture correction can also help (since ergonomics and posture can affect jaw tension).
  • Medication: For some patients, a short course of anti-inflammatory medication or muscle relaxants can relieve acute flare-ups of TMJ pain. We may coordinate with your physician for this if needed.
  • Advanced Treatments: In some cases where conservative measures aren’t enough, trigger point injections or BOTOX® can help relieve symptoms of TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Botox relaxes the overactive jaw muscles that cause pain, tension, and teeth grinding. By reducing muscle activity in targeted areas, BOTOX can ease jaw discomfort, headaches, and facial soreness—offering a non-surgical, minimally invasive solution for long-term pain relief.

Our goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and prevent further joint damage. TMJ disorders can be disruptive – they may interfere with eating, speaking, or simply cause constant discomfort. The good news is that with proper care, most patients see significant improvement. We’ve helped patients from Horsham, North Wales, and beyond get back to comfortable, pain-free living. If you suspect TMJ issues, don’t hesitate to mention your symptoms to Dr. Lala. We’ll work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan to address the root cause of your TMJ problem and provide lasting relief.
