What are Dental sealants? Dental sealants are a simple but effective preventive treatment to guard teeth against cavities. This coating seals off the deep grooves and crevices where food particles and bacteria often get trapped, thus preventing decay from forming in these hard-to-clean areas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cdc.gov, sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities in the first two years after application making them a highly effective shield for your child’s (or even an adult’s) teeth.
Who can benefit from sealants? While sealants are commonly placed on children’s permanent molars as soon as they come in (around ages 6 and 12), teens and adults without fillings or decay in those teeth can also benefit.
